The US Postal Service issued this sheet of forty 29-cent stamps on January 8, 1993 in Memphis, TN, and the Elvis stamp went on to be the bestselling stamp of all time. This stamp is part of the Legends of American Music Series which the Postal Service created In an effort to provide collectors with more exciting, contemporary stamp themes. Highlighting the music our nation has come to be known for, these stamps featured Rock ‘n’ Roll/Rhythm & Blues artists, popular Broadway Musicals, and Country Western musicians. The new series began in January with the issue of the single Elvis stamp. “Oklahoma!” and Hank Williams followed several months later.
